Your trip in detail

Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Wake up in Tokyo 東京

    Welcome to Japan!

At Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) airport, you'll be welcomed by our airport assistant, who will hand over your travel documents and Pocket WiFi to ensure a smooth start to your trip.

Then, you'll travel to your accommodation by shared shuttle or bus, along with other guests heading to the same or a nearby hotel.

Please note that shuttles/buses depart between 1.5 and 3 hours after your scheduled flight arrival, and may make stops at other hotels en route.

If you prefer a direct transfer to your accommodation, the 'Private Taxi from the Airport' option is available.

  • Day 2 : First steps in the capital

For the first days of your tour, you have complete freedom to explore Tokyo at your leisure. Exploring Tokyo can be an intense but incredibly rewarding experience, as each district boasts its own distinct style and character.

These diverse neighbourhoods collectively tell a rich and universal story of the city, making a district-by-district approach the most effective way to truly experience Tokyo. The Yamanote Line, with its convenient circular route, is ideally suited for this kind of district exploration.

A trip to Tokyo isn't complete without exploring its famous districts: Shinjuku, known for its entertainment and nightlife; Shibuya, for its youthful energy and shopping; and Harajuku, the center of youth fashion and cosplay.

When in these districts, be sure to check out:
    - Meiji Jingu, a peaceful imperial shrine.
    - Takeshita-Dori, Tokyo's trendy street food and fashion hub.
    - Omotesando, Tokyo's own Champs-Élysées.
    - Shibuya Crossing, the world-famous pedestrian crossing.

  • Day 3 : Now for some activity...

Today, you'll enjoy a guided tour of Tokyo specially designed for families. Your English-speaking guide will meet you at your hotel at 9AM to begin the full-day exploration.

From the luxury boutiques of Ginza, the electronic fervour of Akihabara, to the traditional cafes and restaurants of Ueno, Tokyo offers something to captivate every visitor, children and adults alike.

  • Day 4 : On the way to visit the iconic Mount Fuji

Prior to traveling to Hakone, you'll need to activate your Hakone Free Pass at Shinjuku Station. Then, you'll board a train bound for Hakone-Yumoto for a scenic 1.5-hour journey.

The train departs from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo and gradually winds its way through the picturesque valleys of the Mount Fuji region. You'll arrive in Hakone in the late morning.

Upon arrival, we recommend heading to your ryokan first to drop off your luggage, allowing you to explore the area with ease. You'll be captivated by the stunning scenery of this hot spring resort, including Lake Ashi and its breathtaking views of Mount Fuji (weather permitting).

Don't forget to visit the Owakudani volcanic site, which is accessible by cable car. It's worth noting that all transportation – train, bus, cable car, and funicular – is included in your pass.

Please plan to return to your ryokan around 6:30PM, as a traditional Japanese dinner will be served. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing Japanese-style night's sleep on a comfortable futon!

  • Day 5 : The former capital

After departing Hakone-Yumoto Station and then Odawara Station, you'll experience the thrill of boarding the Japanese bullet train, one of the world's fastest trains, for a direct and swift 2-hour journey to Kyoto.

Upon arrival, from around noon, you can settle comfortably into your traditional Japan Experience house, where  helpful Travel Angel will be there to greet you.

With four full days to explore Kyoto, we suggest beginning your afternoon in the historic Gion district, conveniently located near your accommodation, to discover the impressive Kiyomizu-Dera, famous for its wooden stage, the charming and historic streets of Sannen-zaka & Ninen-zaka, and Kodai-ji, Kyoto's beautiful temple renowned for its stunning maple trees and tranquil bamboo groves.

  • Day 6 : Gold and Silver Treasures

For your second day in Kyoto, we suggest a captivating journey through some of the city's most renowned sites.

Begin with the enigmatic Zen rock garden of Ryoan-ji, then marvel at the dazzling gold-leaf-covered Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), followed by the elegant beauty of Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) and its surrounding gardens.

Afterwards, enjoy a tranquil stroll along the enchanting Philosopher's Path, a scenic canal-side walk, and conclude your exploration at the impressive Nanzen-ji Temple complex, one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples.

  • Day 7 : Between tradition and modernity

Continue your exploration of Kyoto by venturing west to discover some of its unique cultural and natural attractions.

First, experiment a sensory immersion in Nishiki Market, Kyoto's bustling culinary heart, where you can sample local delicacies and admire the vibrant displays of fresh produce.

Then, step into the grandeur of Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former residence of the shogun, offering a glimpse into the power and artistry of feudal Japan.

Finally, escape to the district of Arashiyama, renowned for its enchanting bamboo grove and the playful inhabitants of its monkey park, providing a refreshing contrast to the city's urban landscape.

  • Day 8 : On the trail of the Samurai

For your final day before departure, we recommend a captivating journey that combines historical wonder and vibrant nightlife.

Immerse yourself in history with a visit to Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Revered as Japan's most perfectly preserved castle, its elegant white facade earns it the nickname 'White Heron Castle'.

This journey takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes by train from Kyoto (including two transfers).

  • Day 9 : Between temples and deer

Today, explore Nara, Japan's ancient first capital, established in the 700s, accessible by a quick train ride. In Nara, you can see old temples, peaceful gardens, and learn a lot about Japanese culture.

First, walk around Nara Park, a big green area with hundreds of friendly deer. People think these deer are special messengers from the gods, and they make the park even more peaceful.

Then, head towards Kasuga-taisha, a Shinto shrine famous for its many bronze and stone lanterns. The paths with the lanterns are beautiful and quiet, and you can feel a special connection to the history there.

Next, be amazed by Todai-ji, where you can find the Daibutsu (Great Buddha). This is a huge bronze statue that shows how important Buddhism is to Nara. You can also see other things in the temple, like the big Nandaimon Gate and other buildings with old religious art.

Nara is special because it has old history and culture, but it's also a calm and natural place. When you visit the temples, gardens, and streets, you'll see how beautiful and spiritual this city is. Overnight stay in Nara.

  • Day 10 : First steps in the capital of Kansai

It's time to head to your next destination : Osaka, the capital of the Kansai region. We recommend that you start your visit slowly, in the northern and eastern districts:

Immerse yourself in its history with a visit to the medieval castle, its gardens and its cherry blossom trees in bloom during April.

Then, head for the city centre and Nakanoshima Island for a striking contrast between skyscrapers and rose gardens. Continue your exploration with a nature break in Utsubo Park, a haven of peace in the heart of the business district.

Shopaholics will find what they're looking for in Umeda, a veritable temple of Japanese boutiques. Finish your day by climbing to the top of the Umeda Sky Building for a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole of Kansai, and even Kyoto on a clear day!

  • Day 11 : Universal Studios Japan

Today, spend a day at Universal Studios Japan!

Get ready for a day of blockbuster thrills included in your tour! Dive into the heart-pounding rides and exciting worlds of Universal Studios Japan, conveniently located near central Osaka.

Explore immersive themed zones based on your favorite movies, and experience exhilarating shows and attractions.

  • Day 12 : Gastronomic introduction

For your final day in Osaka, we recommend the following itinerary:

Explore the depths of the sea at the Osaka Kaiyukan aquarium, the largest in the world in terms of volume. Then head to the Tennoji district for an immersion in Japanese culture with a visit to the Shitenno-ji Buddhist temple, one of the oldest in the country.

For a unique relaxation experience, visit Spa World, Japan's largest variety of thermal baths. Let yourself be transported by the retro atmosphere of Shinseikai, then plunge into the technological world of DenDen machi, Osaka's equivalent to Akihabara in Tokyo

Continue your evening in Dotonbori, Japan's liveliest area, renowned for its restaurants, bars and neon signs. Don't forget to try the local culinary specialities, such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki.

  • Day 13 : Return to Tokyo

Head back to Tokyo in the morning via the bullet train. It’s your last day in the capital, so be sure to also venture into other major hubs such as Ikebukuro, Ueno, Ginza, and Akihabara.

Also, don't hesitate to wander into some of the more residential districts located further from the city center. Certain off-the-beaten-path neighbourhoods, such as Shimokitazawa, Naka-Meguro, Koenji, and Nakano, can offer a complete change of scenery.

  • Day 14 : Sayonara, and see you next time!

In the morning, you will take a shared shuttle or bus with other passengers from your hotel or a nearby hotel bound to Haneda or Narita airport.

This transfer is included, but not accompanied, and will arrive at the airport between 1.5 and 3 hours before your flight departs. Please note that you may make stops before reaching the airport.

If you would prefer a private transfer at a time of your choosing and with no additional stops, please select the 'Private Taxi to Airport' option.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you are interested in extending your trip in Kansai or elsewhere. We would be happy to provide additional recommendations.

    Welcome home!

In each accommodation, a standard adult bed will be offered to them, and a standard seat will be allocated to them in transport. From 0 to 2 years old inclusive, a "baby" rate is offered. This price corresponds to the allocation of a cot in the majority of the accommodation of the chosen tour. However, we cannot guarantee a baby cot in each accommodation.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • The programme is subject to change due to weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that any information mentioned is subject to change or modification.
  • Your travel documents will be given to you as follows:
    • Travel diary by email before departure, and other electronic documents
    • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • As this tour is designed for families (at least one adult and at least one child/teenager), it is not possible for solo travelers to book this tour. We recommend our "Solo Japan" tour or any other tour accessible to solo travelers.
  • In very rare cases, mostly in very high season, the itinerary may be reversed. You will be informed in your travel guide. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is 200¥/night/person (about £1/$1.30) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Japan Experience houses: all of them have private dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, in addition to the bedrooms. A washing machine and Wi-Fi are also available within the accommodation. In all houses, bed linen and towels are provided, and the price includes the travel angel service, tourist tax and cleaning at the end of the stay.
  • Japan Experience Traditional houses in Kyoto: most of them are either located in the historical district of Gion, or on the edge of the Path of Philosophy and the Silver Pavilion.
  • In the ryokan, guests sleep on comfortable futons placed on the tatami mat. The room has a private sink and toilet. As is customary in Japanese ryokan, the onsen bathroom is shared (separate sexes) unless you select the "private bathroom in the room" option.
OPTIONAL: Enjoy a private Japanese bathroom (traditional or modern onsen) in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have visible tattoos.
The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised on either western beds or in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets of the 4* ryokan are private.
  • Hotel in Tokyo:
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of a single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172sq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option. (This option is only valid for the hotel in Tokyo, not for the traditional accommodation in Kyoto).
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed.
  • Single room: People traveling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for orders with an odd number of participants. Please note that if you request more than two people in a single room, the single room supplement will be applied to all accommodation except for the ryokans (3 and 4*). In fact, as this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms for up to 5 people.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. We will aim to keep you as close as possible.
  • Names of the hotels: The names provided on our site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, a hotel of equivalent standing will be offered. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour. Please contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates presented on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also leave from Tokyo. You will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 6:30pm at the latest to make the most of the airport services of your tour (welcome and transfer to Tokyo). The return flight is on the same day due to the time difference. Please consult us for any uncertainty or advice in your choice of international flights.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will show you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to select the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-charged transport prepayment card of ¥1,500 (around £7 / $10) (Suica or Pasmo brand); Hakone Free Pass 2 days, Tokyo Metro Pass 3 days, Kansai Area Pass 3 days and Bullet train shinkansen tickets between Odawara → Kyoto & Osaka → Tokyo. These cards should cover a large part of your trips during the stay. After the ¥1,500 credit on the transport card runs out, or if a train line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, any travel will be at your own expense by recharging the transport card (at ticket machines in all stations and metro stations, cash only). A metro ticket in Tokyo costs around ¥250, depending on the length of the journey).

Your activities :

  • The airport welcome is in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit holding a sign with the name of the reservation. They will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. They will not accompany you to Tokyo (this is possible, but optional).
  • An English speaking Travel Angel who is a specialist in Japan will be there to welcome you to your traditional house in Kyoto. They will give you the keys, explain how the house and its facilities work, give you a quick tour of the area (tourist sites, supermarkets, bike rental...) and answer all your questions. They will be available throughout your stay in case of any problems or questions.
  • Dive into the heart-pounding rides and exciting worlds of Universal Studios Japan, conveniently located near central Osaka. Explore immersive themed zones based on your favorite movies and experience exhilarating shows and attractions.
  • Tokyo Family Tour: Your guide will pick you up at your accommodation at 9am, and the tour will last until 5pm. Details will be in your travel diary.

Your meals :

  • Breakfasts which are not included in your package can be added at the reception when you arrive at the hotel. However, you will find many cafés near your hotel serving great breakfasts, often tastier than those in the hotels, which sometimes have tight schedules and are predominantly savoury. If you would like to add breakfast to all your hotels (excluding Japan Experience houses) when you make your reservation, you can select it as an option.
  • Traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mostly savoury) are included in your Hakone tour. Don't hesitate to let us know any dietary requirements you may have, we will pass them on to the ryokan so that they can take them into account when planning the meals. If the ryokan cannot take any of these dietary requirements into account, we cannot be held responsible and no compensation will be issued.
  • Japan Experience houses come with a fully equipped kitchens, and are located close to markets.

Your additional services:

  • A pocket wifi is included in your tour. It allows unlimited high-speed internet access. Your Pocket WiFi will be given to you at the airport upon arrival.
  • It comes with a small booklet to operate your device (don't panic: it's easy to use) and a prepaid envelope to return your device at the end of your stay. Your pocket wifi will work until the last day of your tour in Japan.
  • A maximum of 5 different devices (phones, tablets, computers, etc) can be connected to one pocket wifi at once.
  • A single pocket wifi is provided for a tour booking of 1 to 5 people. For a booking of 6 people or more, a second pocket wifi will be added automatically, and at no extra cost to your reservation.

A 35% deposit is required at the time of booking to confirm your reservation. The remaining balance must be paid in full no later than 35 days before the departure date.
