Feel free to have a look at our "Activities in Tokyo" page for an overview of all the activities we offer in the capital. You can book directly on our website.

  • Day 5 : The heart of the Japanese soul

In the morning, we recommend you to have your luggage sent to your hotel in Kyoto (check with the hotel reception staff) and bring a small bag for your nights in Hakone.

Go to Shinjuku station to activate your Hakone Free Pass and board a train for Hakone Yumoto (1h30 journey, details in your travel pack, all included).

The train gradually leaves Japan's megalopolis behind as it winds its way through the valleys of the Mount Fuji region. You will arrive in Hakone in the late morning. Return to Ichinoyu Shinkan ryokan or a ryokan of the same standard to drop off your small bag and explore the region.

You'll be charmed by the magnificent scenery of this area, Lake Ashi and its view of Mount Fuji (on a clear day!). Not forgetting Owakudani volcanic site, accessible by cable car. All transport (train, bus, cable car...) is included in your Hakone Free Pass.

Come back to the ryokan in the late afternoon. Your traditional Japanese dinner will be waiting for you at around 6.30pm, before you spend the night Japanese-style!

See below for details of the ryokan overnight stay.

  • Day 6 : Gentle exploration in Hakone

Traditional Japanese breakfast at your ryokan.

Enjoy the view of the surrounding nature and prepare for a day of relaxation:

    - Visit the wonderful Hakone Fine Arts Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Japanese and Western art, presented in a serene and elegant setting. Take your time to enjoy the art exhibitions.

    - Head to Chokoku no Mori, Hakone's open-air museum, which home to a collection of modern and contemporary art in a beautiful setting surrounded by mountains. Enjoy the outdoor sculptures and relax in the museum's outdoor thermal baths foot.

End your day in style by returning to your ryokan for dinner. Then relax in the communal or private hot spring baths (optional).

  • Day 7 : On your way to the ancient capital

Traditional Japanese breakfast at the ryokan.

Make your way to Hakone Yumoto station and then Odawara station to board one of the fastest trains in the world: the Shinkansen ! Journey to Kyoto (direct, approx. 2 hours).

  • Day 9 : Experience Uji, the city of tea

Embark on a guided excursion to Uji, a town renowned for producing the best matcha (powdered green tea) in Japan. Tour the Japanese countryside in a minibus with a guide, passing through green tea fields and meeting the producers!

Along the way, the first minka, or Japanese country houses, make their appearance as you take the small country road that runs alongside the river on its right bank. Signs of civilisation gradually disappear, and exuberant Japanese vegetation emerges.

You'll discover one of the most important Japanese green tea plantations. Strolling through endless Tuscan-like valleys is a unique and relaxing experience. Groups of monkeys can often be seen frolicking in the labyrinthine greenery.

You'll taste several types of tea from the surrounding fields, and learn about the subtleties of this drink. But more importantly, you'll experience the warmth of Japanese hospitality and the pleasure of sharing a moment with passionate people.

At the end of the day, return to Kyoto. After your escapade in the valleys that saw the birth of Japanese tea, you can bet that your next cup of tea will take on a whole new flavor...

*The day of the Uji excursion is subject to change. It will be either on a Wednesday or a Sunday.

  • Day 10 : Excursions near Kyoto

Here are a few ideas for excursions around Kyoto:

    - Hikone, a little marvel perched on Lake Biwa, it's home to one of the few original (and most delightful) Japanese castles still in existence (30min one-way train journey).

    - Miyama, literally meaning "The Beautiful Mountain", has thatched houses, local crafts and rural recipes. It's a delightful getaway just a stone's throw from Kyoto (2hrs by train and bus).

    - Lake Biwa is visited for its scenery and the shrines scattered along its shores. But the lake has another hidden treasure: its beaches! Located mainly on the western shore, they offer a lengths of clear sand in the shade of pine trees, as well as the promise of a swim in warm, clear water... without the inconvenience of salt water! (20 min by train)

  • Day 11 : Between temples and deer

We recommend a 50-minute journey to Nara by train, included in your JR Pass.

Visit Nara, Japan's first fixed capital in the 8th century.
    Discover:
    - Kasuga Taisha Shinto shrine and its thousands of lanterns
    - Todaiji, with its large bronze Buddha and the imposing Nan-Daimon Gate
    - Kofukuji temple and its delightful pagoda

If you'd like to be accompanied on this day, one of our English-speaking guides can reveal all the secrets of Japan's first capital (optional, return trip from Kyoto).

Return to Kyoto and make a sunset stop at Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto's immense shrine of 10,000 torii gates that wind up the mountain.

  • Day 12 : Between tradition and modernity

There are still plenty of places to discover, depending on what interests you: the Arashiyama bamboo grove, the Shimogamo shrine or the Daitoku-ji temple complex... or even the famous manga museum !

Take a look at our "Activities in Kyoto" page for an overview of all the activities and excursions we offer in Kyoto. You can book directly on our website.

  • Day 13 : Departure for the capital of Kansai

Take the 25-minute train ride to Osaka

Drop off your belongings at the Hotel Noum or equivalent.

We recommend that you start your visit to Osaka slowly, visiting the northern and eastern districts:
    - Osaka's medieval castle, with its park full of plum and cherry trees (depending on the season)
    - The city centre and Nakanoshima Island, with its rose park surrounded by buildings

    - Finally, ascend the Umeda Sky building at dusk for a 360° view of Kansai region (including Kyoto on a clear day!)

And if you'd like to sample a range of delicious local specialities, you can book a food  tour with a local guide directly on our website.

    - The Tennoji district and Shitenno-ji Buddhist temple, one of the oldest in Japan
    - Spa World, Japan's largest variety of thermal baths (onsen)
    - Shinseikai, with its retro charm
    - DenDen machi, the technologeek village
    - Finish off in Dotonbori, the liveliest district of the city, full of bars and restaurants

For lunch, we recommend you visit a takoyaki vendor, one of the city's specialities. These are fried dumplings filled with octopus and topped with a variety of sauces and garnishes, and they're absolutely delicious!

  • Day 15 : Discover Okayama

Shinkansen journey to Himeji (approx. 35 minutes, free with your Japan Rail Pass).

A symbol of the town and known as one of the most beautiful in Japan, Himeji's famous "White Heron Castle" can be seen as soon as you arrive by train. Located at the end of the wide Otemae-dori street, the keep overlooks the town. Built in the 14th century, this is one of the few Japanese castles that isn't a modern replica, and it is very well preserved.

Continue on to Okayama (about 20 minutes, free with your Japan Rail Pass). Check in to your hotel between the station and the castle.

Take a stroll through the sumptuous Korakuen Garden, one of the most famous gardens in Japan. Spread over 14 hectares, it was completed in 1700. There are tea houses, large lakes, peaceful hills, maple forests, a few paths and waterfalls and even a lotus pond. Its name means 'garden of further rejoicing', referencing a quote from Confucius.

The castle, nicknamed 'Raven Castle', is famous for its rare black color. It's an excellent 1966 replica of the original version, the original plans having been copied for the reconstruction.

Okayama is also home to a number of fascinating museums. The Prefectural Museum displays a variety of objects discovered in different areas of Okayama Prefecture, ranging from prehistoric artefacts to the Edo (1603-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. The art museum displays 2,000 works by famous artists from the prefecture. The Oriental Museum, on the other hand, focuses on art from the Near and Middle East.

  • Day 16 : Canals in Kurashiki

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Travel to the romantic town of Kurashiki, a 17-minute train ride from Okayama (included with your JR Pass).

Kurashiki, a former merchant town with willow-lined canals, is sure to delight you:
    - The Bikan district, with its traditional storehouses now converted into charming shops and cafes
    - The Ohara Museum, home to paintings by Monet, Matisse, Renoir and others
    - The Folk Art Museum, dedicated to regional history

Return to Okayama at the end of the day.

  • Day 17 : History in the spotlight

Shinkansen train journey to Hiroshima (approx. 1 hour, covered by your Japan Rail Pass).

Check into the Hotel Intergate or similar 3* hotel.

    - Visit the Peace park and Peace memorial, important sites in the country's history.

    - Take in the Genbaku Dome, the only building to somewhat survive the atomic bomb that hit Hiroshima on 6 August, 1945.

    - Discover the sumptuous castle and its park filled with cherry trees, before sampling one of Hiroshima's specialities: okonomiyaki!

  • Day 18 : The sacred island

A short 30-minute train and ferry ride to the island of Miyajima, where you can discover this little piece of island paradise nicknamed "the island of the gods".

You can admire Itsukushima-jinja shrine and its iconic large gate (ootorii) built into the sea.

Take the cable car up to Mount Misen and walk back down. A breathtaking view of Hiroshima Bay awaits you!

Don't miss Daisho-in Buddhist temple, nestling among the trees at the foot of Mount Misen. Hundreds of Buddhist statues can be seen all along the pavilions and paths.

In the late afternoon, head back to Hiroshima.

  • Day 19 : Back to Tokyo

    Breakfast at the hotel.

Return to the capital by Shinkansen train (approx. 3h45m)

Settle in to the OMO3 Tokyo Akasaka by Hoshino Resorts or similar 3*hotel.

Take advantage of your afternoon to travel back to the future:

Your tour :

  • The prices shown on this page may vary according to the Japanese Yen exchange rate.
  • Unfortunately, this tour is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
  • Pets are not accepted.
  • Children and babies are accepted. From 3 to 11 years, a child rate is available. They will be offered a standard adult bed in each accommodation and a standard seat on public transport. A "baby" rate is available for children aged 0 to 2 inclusive. This rate corresponds to the allocation of a cot in most of the accommodation on the chosen tour. However, we cannot guarantee a cot in every accommodation.
  • This programme may be subject to change due to weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that any information mentioned is subject to change or adaptation.
  • You will receive your travel documents as follows:
  • Digital travel guide by e-mail at least 20 days before departure
  • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transport card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi when you arrive at the airport, provided by our airport assistant.
  • As this tour has been designed for families (at least one adult with at least one child/teenager), it is not possible for single people to book this tour. We recommend the "Japan solo" tour or any other tour accessible to solo travellers.
    • In rare cases, mainly during the very high season, stages may be reversed. You will be informed of this in your mini travel guide. Thank you for your understanding.

Your accommodation:

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the town and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the cost of the reservation. It generally amounts to ¥200/night/person (around €1.60) but may be a little higher in 4-star hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodation, it is included in the initial price of the tour.
  • Ryokan in Hakone: in the ryokan, you will sleep on comfortable futons laid on tatami mat flooring. The room has a private washbasin and WC. As is customary in Japanese ryokan, the "onsen" bathroom is shared (not mixed sex) unless you select the "private bathroom in the room" option. With this option you can enjoy a private Japanese bathroom (traditional or modern onsen) in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have clearly visible tattoos. The 4* ryokan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons either on western beds or in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets in 4* ryokans are private. As this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms that can accommodate up to 5 people.
  • Room for 2 people: Rooms for two people in Western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be placed closer together.
  • Room for 3 people: If there are 3, 5 or more of you, you will be allocated a triple room.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. The aim is nevertheless to be close to each other.
  • Hotel names: The names given on our site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, a hotel of equivalent quality will be provided.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour. Please contact us if you wish to include flights in your order: economy class flights with stopovers or direct flights, air upgrades to eco-premium or business, departures from the provinces or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
The departure and end dates shown on this page are for your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also depart from Tokyo. On departure, you will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 4pm at the latest to be there before 8pm to meet your travel angel in the traditional Tokyo flat. The return flight is the same day, given the favourable time difference, with a minimum take-off time of 9.30am. Please contact us if you are unsure or need any further information about the choice of international flights.
  • Airport transfers: The shared limousine shuttle bus departs from the airport and stops at a platform located between 1 and 15 minutes' walk from your accommodation. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will take you to the platform to catch the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your accommodation, choose the "Accompanied airport transfer" option when booking. The transfer is made by shuttle or shared bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival time, and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to select the "Private taxi from the airport" option. Please note: due to the large number of changes to flight times by airlines, if you are notified of a change to your arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and the change exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. In this case, you will have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for an abusive schedule change. The same applies to your return: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. In the same way, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement from the airline being the only solution. Japan Experience does not accept responsibility in the event of last-minute schedule changes. The same applies to the return transfer.
  • Your tour includes a pre-loaded ¥1,500 (approx. €9) transport pre-payment card (Suica or Pasmo brand); a 14-day Japan Rail Pass and a 3-day Hakone Free Pass. These cards/tickets should cover most of your journeys during your stay. Please note: once the ¥1,500 on the transport pre-payment card has run out, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, you will be responsible for all travel by recharging your transport card (at ticket machines in all stations and metro stations; cash only).
  • A metro ticket in Tokyo costs around €2, depending on the length of the journey.
The Japan Rail Pass is a nominative train pass for foreign travellers wishing to visit Japan. This pass allows unlimited travel for 14 consecutive days on all Japan Railways (JR) trains throughout Japan. When you are met at the airport by our assistant, you will receive a voucher to be exchanged at a JR office (list of addresses provided in your travel pack). You will be asked to show your passport and fill in a form. It is during this exchange that you will choose the start date for using your Pass. Once your Pass has been activated, it will be valid for 14 consecutive days from the date you choose. To avoid wasting time when you arrive at the airport, you are asked to exchange your voucher once you have arrived in Tokyo. Exchanging it at the airport could delay your airport shuttle. With your Japan Rail Pass in hand, simply go to the station, show your Pass to the ticket inspector at the entrance gates and board any JR train. Almost all trains in Japan are open seating. If you're worried about getting a seat (on a Shinkansen, for example), simply go to a ticket office and reserve your seat at no extra charge. The Japan Rail Pass covers all JR and Shinkansen lines in Japan. It does not cover the following journeys:
  • Metro and bus travel in the cities (payable by prepaid transport card, included in your package)
Transfers between stations and hotels (on foot, by bus, metro or taxi)
Journeys on private train lines (non-JR lines)
Journeys on Nozomi and Mizuho ultra-fast Shinkansen (a supplement fee applies to these trains)
Journeys made outside the period of validity of the Japan Rail Pass.
Please note: It is not necessary to be in possession of a Japan Rail Pass covering your entire stay. In fact, it is only profitable if it is used to make long journeys between the various stages of your stay (particularly by Shinkansen), which are very expensive. In big cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass, and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo metro tickets: €2, daily bus pass in Kyoto: €5). So providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 14 days (21) would not be cost-effective, and on the contrary, would significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is of Japanese nationality and lives in Japan, or a foreigner but lives in Japan for tax purposes (including students), they will not be able to benefit from the price displayed as they are unfortunately not eligible for a Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to obtain the price of the tour without the Japan Rail Pass. This person will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass.
If this person is of Japanese nationality but not resident in Japan, then he or she may qualify for the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see www.japan-experience.com/transportation/japan-rail-pass).

  • You will be met at the airport in English. Your airport assistant will be waiting for you at the customs exit with a sign bearing the name of the booking. He will give you your travel documents and take you to your airport transfer. He will not accompany you to Tokyo (possible, but optional).
  • The guided tour of Shinjuku takes place in English, in groups of no more than 8 people, from 7pm. More details on the meeting point are in your travel pack. Dinner is not provided, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.
  • The guided tour of Gion takes place in English, in groups of no more than 12 people, from 7pm. More details on the meeting point will be in your travel pack. Dinner is not included, but your guide will be able to recommend the best places to eat.
  • The "On the Tea Road" activity in Uji is a private guided day. Any additional costs (entrance fees, meals) are at your own expense.
  • The activity days are subject to change depending on guide availability.

Your meals:

  • The traditional Japanese dinner and Japanese breakfast (mainly savoury) are included in your ryokan tour. Please let us know if you have any dietary intolerances, and we will pass them on to the ryokan so that it can take them into account when trying to adapt the meals. If the ryokan cannot take into account the dietary restrictions transmitted by Japan Experience, we cannot be held responsible and no refund of meals will be given.
  • Any breakfasts not included in your package can be added at reception when you arrive at the hotels (payment on the spot). However, close to your hotel, you will find numerous cafés serving good breakfasts which are often tastier than those in hotels, which sometimes have restrictive timetables. Alternatively you can add all breakfasts to your tour booking by selecting this an an option at the time.

Additional services:

  • A pocket wifi is included in your tour. It provides unlimited high-speed Internet access. Your Pocket WiFi will be given to you upon arrival at the airport.
  • It comes with a small guidebook to operating your device (don't panic: it's simple!) and a pre-paid envelope for returning the device at the end of your stay before departing the country. Your pocket wifi will work until the last day of your tour.
  • A maximum of 5 devices (phone, tablet, computer) can be connected to one pocket wifi.
  • A single pocket wifi is provided for a tour booking of 1 to 5 people. For a booking of 6 people or more, a second pocket wifi will be added automatically and at no extra cost to your booking.

A 35% deposit is required at the time of booking to confirm your reservation. The remaining balance must be paid in full no later than 35 days before the departure date.

In case of cancellation, the following fees apply:

  • 15% for bookings canceled more than 35 days in advance;
  • 50% for cancellations between 35 and 21 days prior to the departure date;
  • 75% for cancellations between 20 and 8 days prior to the departure date;
  • 100% for cancellations within 7 days of the departure date.

These fees are calculated on the total price of the excursion, excluding insurance.
