Discover North of Japan with the New Hokkaido Shinkansen : Hakodate and Aomori
There is plenty to discover with the new Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Hakodate has a recent history as it was only developed in the nineteenth century, becoming a port open to foreigners. It was the refuge of the last supporters of the shogun, who for a brief time proclaimed it the Republic of Ezo. The city is proud of its old red brick warehouses, now a favorite meeting spot among teens for its many restaurants. There a historical district of western houses and wooden churches to discover.
Exploring the Hakodate City Museum of Northern People is also a great way to learn about the native inhabitants of Hokkaido.
Finally, don’t miss the Goryokaku fort and the night view from Mt Hakodate.
Onuma National Park : easy to reach by car or by train, twenty kilometers north of Hakodate is the Onuma Quasi National Park. There you can enjoy walking or biking in the middle of lakes, mountains and forest.
Aomori is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture, in the northern Tohoku region. Every August, you can come and see the Aomori Neputa Festival. The float is carried through the city during the evening from August 2 to 6 and during the daytime on August 7.
