Please note that the eSIM is a product that requires special handling on your phone to activate. In addition, it is only compatible with a certain number of phones. If you're not familiar with using an eSIM, we advise you to use Pocket WiFi or a physical SIM card instead.


What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a virtual SIM that doesn't need to be inserted into a phone or mobile device like a regular physical SIM card. These are great options for those who travel, as the set up process is quick and efficient. 

eSIM data service is integrated within the smartphone,and is able to be used immediately, on the spot, through online activation and ready to be used throughout the day! For your trip to Japan, an email with a link and instructions to acitvate the eSIM plan will be sent. 


Terms of use

  • You can only access the internet with this eSIM while in Japan.
  • Public WiFi is available in Japan, but it's not as common as in other countries and often has a time-consuming log-in process. So if you want to be connected throughout the day with data while you travel, and wish to avoid expensive roaming fees, an eSIM plan is the perfect solution.
  • This service is NOT available for devices that do not support eSIM. Please see our FAQ for more information.
  • This service is for internet (data communication) only, and You cannot send SMS (Text Messages) or make phone calls.
  • International data roaming is not supported.
  • The eSIM is compatible with certain device models, and cannot be used for models that are not supported. Please see the FAQ to check if your device is compatible with our eSIM or not.
  • The internet connection provided has a 4G data plan.
  • Tethering is available for most of the popular devices (iPhone or Samsung) but is not available with some other devices, mainly Android. If you want to be sure you can connect all your devices, we recommend you purchase separate eSIMs for each of them.
  • If your device is not applicable with Band 1(2,0GHZ) and 3(1,7GHZ), your phone cannot access the internet with our internet products.
  • If your device is not applicable with Band 19(800MHZ), the internet could be unstable in the countryside around Lake Kawaguchiko, Kyushu or Hokkaido. Most European devices are not compatible with this band, so the eSIM speed may be slow in the Kyushu or Hokkaido countryside with most European devices.
  • The eSIM server is under maintenance every week between Tuesday 10pm until Wednesday 9am (Japan time). This does not affect eSIMs already in use, but no new eSIMs can be activated during this period.

Please note: more phones are compatible with our physical SIM card than with the eSIM (see our list of compatible phones and our FAQ below).

How do I use the eSIM in Japan?

  1. Following your purchase, you will receive your eSIM activation link by e-mail.
  2. If you're traveling to Japan within 48 hours, you can click on the link immediately to obtain your activation code.
  3. If you're traveling later, don't click on the link until within 48 hours of your arrival in Japan, as once you've obtained the activation code, the days of use will automatically start counting down after 48 hours.
  4. You will need internet (wifi or cellular data) to obtain your eSIM activation code: either at the airport when leaving for Japan, or at the airport/hotel when arriving in Japan.
  5. Follow the user guide sent by e-mail to obtain your activation code and configure it on your phone.
  6. If you try to connect to the internet immediately after downloading eSIM to your device, please wait a while as sometimes the connection is not established right away*. Do not delete eSIM from your device.

*Note that the eSIM server is under maintenance every week between Tuesday 10pm until Wednesday 9am (JST). During this time no activation codes can be issued. The code will be issued once the maintenance period is over.

What is the cancellation policy for the eSIM?

  • Cancellation and refund is not possible once you have received the email with the activation link.
  • If you delete your eSIM from your device, please order a new one from our website. There is no refund after deleting the eSIM, even if there was a fault with the eSIM or the device used.
