Olympic Games 2020 - Boxing at the foot of the Tokyo SkyTree

Sweet Science

Boxing was a combat sport practiced in antiquity by the Greeks and the Romans, present at the Olympiads of 688. It was reintroduced into the modern Olympic Games during the third edition of Saint-Louis in 1904. In 2020, opponents will face off in central Tokyo, in the shadow of the SkyTree!

The ancestral fight

Boxing is a combat sport already present nearly 2000 years before our era among the Cretans and the Greeks.

At that time, the opponents faced each other with their hands bandaged with leather straps, and a match only ended when one of the two gave up or was knocked out.

It is entered in the events of the Olympic Games during the first American edition of 1904, to satisfy the American public extremely fond of this discipline, despite certain reservations due to its violence.

Except for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, it has since been present at each Olympiad and has been the introduction to the world of some great champions, including Muhammad Ali during the Rome Olympics in 1960.
