History of Fugan Canal Kansui Park
Fugan Canal Kansui Park was created over many years following flood control on the Jinzu River beginning in 1901. Starting in 1928, a canal was built to Higashi-iwase on the coast at Toyama Bay and a port and industrial area constructed. The Fugan Canal was finally completed in 1935 and played a considerable part in the pre-war development of Toyama city.
The canal fell into disuse from the 1950's but was cleaned up and preserved by the city authorities. From the 1980's a 9.7 hectare park was created and the symbolic Tenmon-kyo Bridge constructed.
