The advertising museum アドミュージアム東京
advertising culture
The Advertising Museum, nestled within the Caretta Shiodome Shopping Complex, traces the history of advertising and marketing from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the present day. A unique place in the archipelago!
Respect for a man's commitment
Inaugurated in December 2002 in the brand new premises of the Caretta Shiodome shopping centre, the advertising museum is the work of the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Foundation. This institution, which was founded in 1965 under the aegis of the advertising agency Dentsu , has set itself the objective of "promoting marketing, particularly advertising, encouraging related studies and research and advancing the theoretical and technical aspects of marketing, thus contributing to the economic, industrial and cultural progress of Japan". Nothing being left to chance, the opening to the public of the museum coincided with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yoshida Hideo (1903-1963), fourth president of the Dentsu firm.
An emblematic figure of Japanese marketing, nicknamed the "advertising demon", he made a lasting impression on Dentsu by reaching the highest rank in the firm in 1947. Under his presidency, the company founded in 1901 was considerably modernized. in particular by following marketing precepts from the United States and Europe. In this desire for recognition undertaken by the foundation, the museum has taken place in the complex attached to the Dentsu Building ; housing the headquarters of the advertising agency for which Yoshida Hideo worked so hard.
A history of advertising
The only museum of its kind in the entire archipelago, the place preserves more than 300,000 advertisements , the oldest of which date back to the Edo period. In this long history of advertising , you are led to review all the media and devices imagined by traders, artists and then advertising agencies over the centuries.
The chronological presentation gives pride of place to signs, nishiki-e prints on which ukiyo-e artists skilfully placed the names of popular businesses and products, advertisements for the traditional sugoroku board game, flyers or hikifuda , distributed cards during store inaugurations, end-of-year greetings called ebira , announcements published in the press and magazines, promotional gifts, posters, advertising films (Japanese and foreign), radio spots... This multiplicity of media and media testifies the evolution of graphics and the technologies used. Through the brands and products illustrated, it is indeed the socio-cultural dimension of advertising that is highlighted.

Extend the visit
After long months of closure for renovation, the exhibition spaces reopened in December 2017. The immaculate white rooms are equipped with designer furniture and digital visitor assistance devices . Gathered under the poetic name "cabins of the 4 feelings", four cabins suspended similar to clouds allow you to view old advertisements and appreciate their sentimental significance. Sometimes funny or moving , this sensory immersion will not leave you cold.
In addition to the exhibition spaces, the museum has a library containing 27,000 documents relating to advertising, marketing and communication. It maintains a large collection of Japanese and foreign journals as well as advertising and commercial documents. And to top it all off, admission to the museum is free . A nice marketing move in short!
