The Olympic Games will take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020, in a city that has already experienced the excitement associated with such an event. By 1964, major works had already considerably developed the city's public transport infrastructure, such as the introduction of the world's first high-speed train, the Shinkansen, then the Tokyo Monorail as well as the Shuto Expressway crossing the city.
Olympic works
For 2020, the challenge for Tokyo will be to welcome a very large number of visitors. Japanese from the province going up to Tokyo but also people coming from all the nations of the world. And if Japan is already used to mass tourism, a huger challenge awaits for 2020.
Major works now focus on:
- Haneda Airport, already served by the Tokyo Monorail and the Keikyu Line, will expand to accommodate more international flights.
- The development of three peripheral belts, to no longer reproduce the errors of 1964 and its highways crossing the heart of the city.
- Greater pooling between the railway and metro companies that operate the Tokyo lines, which would make interconnections easier.
- The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) project is in service from 5 am until midnight. The development of the Toranomon bus terminal linking Shimbashi, Kachidoki, and Harumi.
- A new "Toranomon Hills" station on Tokyo Metro's Hibiya Line, located between Kasumigaseki and Kamiya-chō.
- Opening of Takanawa Gateway Station on the southern part of the JR Yamanote Line.
- Work on Sendagaya and Harajuku stations, closest to the new National Olympic Stadium.
Many rail companies and their lines plan to extend their services until 2 am., as will be the case for JR Yamanote, Tokyo Metro, and Toei.
The private companies plan to offer an extension of service of an additional 90 min during the period of the Games.
To prevent the large number of people who will take the train during the two weeks of the Games, security will be greatly reinforced on the platforms thanks to the system of automated barriers in many stations.
Moving crowds
There are still major concerns such as rush hour traffic. Every day of the week the city of Tokyo sees about 8 million people move on the various networks. During the Olympic Games, additional 700,000 people will be on the move daily.
Measures such as:
- encourage employees to take time off,
- offer salarymen to telecommute,
- stagger working hours,
- review the organization of Games logistics.
On the practical side for tourists, the Keikyu company has announced that, during the Games, the hotel suitcase delivery service will be increased in order to avoid congestion.
In Tokyo, the hotspots will develop in two areas, each within 8km of the Olympic Village, in Tokyo Bay, and the center of the capital, as this is where 90% of the events will take place.
Heritage Zone
This area includes the places that were built for or have already been used during the 1964 Olympics: the Olympic Stadium, the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the Yoyogi Olympic Gymnasium, and the Nippon Budokan.
It should be noted that all these sites are less than 5 minutes walk from a JR train or metro station.
Tokyo Bay Area
Around Tokyo Bay and in the artificial islands of Odaiba, new infrastructures have been built for the 2020 Olympics such as the Ariake Arena, the Ariake Olympic Gymnasium, the Tatsumi International Swimming Center, and the Olympic Village.
In this area, the solution proposed during the Olympic Games will be the BRT project or the possibility of stopping at metro stations located a maximum of 10 minutes from the venue.
A little further
And if the vast majority of the events will take place in Tokyo and its close suburbs and are therefore accessible by the public transport system of the capital, other events are organized further in the archipelago.
Given the 2020 Olympics, in all cities where events will take place, public transport will be developed, easier to access for international tourists, and improved with shuttle systems.
The train is also very well developed in Japan and it will be easy for you to connect one city to other thanks to the high-speed train, the Shinkansen. And for more freedom, it is also possible to rent a car in Japan and go on an adventure in the archipelago!
The sports discipline that will make you move the most is the football competition which will take place in Sapporo, Miyagi, Kashima (Ibaragi Prefecture), Saitama, Yokohama, and Chôfu (Tokyo prefecture). There are also golf events, which will be played in Kawagoe, or those of fencing, surfing, wrestling, and taekwondo which are organized in Chiba prefecture.
