Olympic Games 2020 - Tennis at Ariake

Ariake Tennis Park, Tokyo Bay

Tennis was one of the original sports of the modern Olympic Games, with events already present in 1896 in Athens. This year, this competition will be held within the Ariake Tennis Park, in the Tokyo Bay area.

An Olympic event on alternating current

Tennis, a racquet sport where two opponents try to hit a ball over a net, has been an Olympic event since 1896.

Unlike other sports, women 's categories were very quickly integrated into the games, from 1900 for the ladies singles event.

The question of the confrontation of amateur sportsmen with professionals led to the suppression of tennis, an absence which lasted nearly 60 years, until the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. The event has since counted several prestigious winners such as Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, André Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.

Tennis in Ariake

In 2020, the tennis matches will be held at Ariake Tennis Park, located close to Odaiba and its famous Rainbow bridge. Singles and doubles events are planned, as well as a mixed doubles event.

New for this edition, the men's singles final will be played in two sets, to "reduce the concerns of overload for the players" specified by the international tennis federation. In addition, a 10-point super tie-break will be used to decide between the doubles teams who would find themselves one round away.

Stroll around

Ariake is located right in Tokyo Bay, on one of the artificial islands built to gain land from the sea.

A stone's throw from Odaiba, after a tennis match, visitors can go for a walk on the edge of the beach, with a view of the huge Tokyo city opposite.

At night, the largest city in the world takes on its robe of light and offers a particularly impressive vision that will delight any budding photographer.
