In a survey of the best places to surf in Japan, Chiba Prefecture (north of Tokyo) came out on top. It is therefore not surprising that one of its beaches, that of Tsurigasaki, at the extreme south of the 60 km long Kujukuri beach, was selected.
Located on the edge of the Pacific, Tsurigasaki beach is renowned for the consistency of its waves and their powerful surges. It is one of the favorite places for surfers in Japan and around 600,000 come to brave its reefs every year.
The surfing events of the 2020 Olympic Games
For a newcomer, surfing is not an easy discipline to assess. The events being spread over 4 days, and nature being unpredictable, how to ensure that each competitor will have the same conditions, that is to say, approximately the same height and the same type of wave? The idea of a wave pool, as there are now for surfing, had been mentioned but in the end, the ocean carried it away. It was the most ecological solution and by far the most economical.
The competition will bring together a total of 40 competitors, 20 women, and 20 men.
The boards selected are the shortboards (shortboards).
Last interesting point, the dates of the events are not fixed in advance but will be chosen according to the maritime conditions. For more convenience, it is planned to do the events at the start of the games (July 26 to 29) but, depending on the sea conditions and according to the statistics collected over the last ten years on the waves and the wind, the organizers will choose the most favorable days for the competition.
In the meantime, and throughout the Olympic Games, many events will take place on the beach. We are planning surfing competitions but also yoga sessions, organic food stands, etc. A great addition to the Olympic Games!
