Shopping in Naha: Kokusai and Heiwa Streets 国際通り・平和通り
Flavors of Okinawa
The capital of Okinawa Prefecture has many wonders to offer. Kokusai and Heiwa streets are filled with shops and restaurants to discover the local culture!
Everything happens between two stations in the city center, Asahibashi, and Makishi, in the district where the prefecture office, the town hall, and many banks and company headquarters are located. But Kokusai and Heiwa streets offer a parenthesis of authenticity in the enthusiasm of the Okinawan capital in modern post-war architecture. This is also where the parade of the famous Shuri Castle Festival parades!
Kokusai-dori
It is undoubtedly the busiest street in the Okinawa archipelago! A veritable concentration of shops, restaurants, and bars stretching over almost two kilometers, the " Rue Internationale " is a must in the subtropical capital. The city's main artery attracts the curious from all walks of life.
Far from the usual gigantic Japanese shopping malls, the avenue with palm trees alternates between large foreign brands and small local businesses. Traditional clothes, jewelry, alcohol, or handicrafts will find many souvenirs to bring back from your trip to Okinawa.

No need to enter the stores to take the eyes off it. Every Sunday, from noon to 6 pm, a portion of the avenue is closed to traffic to allow local artists to perform. You will thus be able to discover the vibrant and unique cultural heritage of the Ryukyu kingdom, such as the art of Eisa.
South of the Kokusai-dori is the unmissable Makishi public market, nicknamed the kitchen of Naha. Taste the secrets of Okinawa's famous centenarians. Healthy and delicious food!
Heiwa-dori
After "Rue Internationale", head for "Rue de la Paix". You won't have to go very far since they communicate. Turn under the green archway into the street, very popular with bargain hunters. The atmosphere is different from the vast Hapinaha souvenir shop located just opposite. On weekends, the shelves are overflowing, and it becomes difficult to navigate through the crowds.
But despite the animation, Heiwa-dori is of rare authenticity. An abundance of local businesses sells various products typical of the region, such as awamori or shisa statues. Practice your negotiating skills; a smile could get you a discount!
