In the center of Ishigaki city in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa, is the small and somewhat quaint, Yaeyama Museum.

The museum contains a collection of the local crafts of Ishigaki and the other islands in the Yaeyama chain. The museum's over 5,000 exhibits include traditional boats and canoes from around the Yaeyama chain of islands, Okinawa festival shiisa masks and local textiles, mainly clothing. Furthermore there are scale models of traditional Yaeyama architecture, coffin palanquins, scrolls and other historic documents.

Other things to see on Ishigaki Island include Torinji Temple and Gongendo Shrine, just a short way west of Ishigaki Port. The island also offers Yonehara Beach, the colorful and historic Tojin Baka Memorial, Ishigaki Market, Banna Forest Park, Mt Nosoko, Maezato Beach, Mt Omoto, Uganzaki and Yonehara Palm Grove.

Yaeyama Museum Tonoshiro 4-1 Ishigaki Okinawa Prefecture 907-0004 Admission: 200 yen Hours: 9 am-5 pm; (last entrance 4.30 pm) closed Monday or the next day if Monday is a national holiday. Closed December 29 to January 3.
