Kyo odori 京をどり
The geiko show
The curtain rises on porcelain dolls as The Kyo Odori celebrates the arrival of spring with songs and dances performed by geiko (geisha) and apprentices, maiko.
The golden pheasants in the woodwork that adorn the Miyagawacho theater welcome the spectators. The black of the susoshiki (long kimonos padded at the bottom for the dance) contrasts with the alabaster complexion of the young maiko aspirants. Cherry blossoms follow plum blossoms, peach-pink kimonos mingle with lavender-blue kimonos.
No need to understand Japanese. The aesthetic emotion that arises from the beauty of the melodies and the choreographies effortlessly erases the language barrier. A unique experience to discover the vibrant soul of Kyoto.
