- On weekends and holidays, you can take cruises on Lake Biwa aboard the Michigan , a paddle steamer like those sailing on the Mississippi in the United States, built in cooperation with the University of Michigan.
The departure point for the cruises is located next to the fountain Biwako Hana Funsu, 440 meters long. Visit it at night when its jets are illuminated with color effects. - Tourist boats also offer trips from the port of Otsu to the points of interest on the shores of Lake Biwa.

It's party!
If you find yourself in or around Otsu on the first weekend of October , don't miss its traditional festival, Otsu Matsuri. Classified as “important intangible folk heritage”, it dates from the Edo period (1603-1868). You can watch a parade of y amahiki , large floats on which stand karakuri , traditional Japanese mechanical puppets. Much less famous than the major Kyoto festivals , it is also less touristy and more authentic. Popular atmosphere guaranteed!
