To the source
The story says that more than 1300 years ago , the great monk Taicho Daishi would have taken advantage of the hot springs of the village of Awazu to found an onsen . Many people then came to take advantage of the thermal waters, considered a gift from the gods of the nearby mountain to cure their various ailments, and a sanatorium was opened there. It was at this time that Garyo Hoshi, the first of the line to own it, replaced the medical establishment with a ryokan and in 718, the oldest spa hotel in the world was born.

A garden at the heart of the establishment
The current owner, Zengoro Hoshi, represents the 46th generation. With his wife Chizuko, he perpetuates the establishment's tradition of hospitality and excellence. It consists of a hundred rooms, installed in four buildings placed in the shape of a diamond around a magnificent garden. In this haven of peace, mosses and plants flourish with the seasons. In a purely Japanese spirit, each of the establishment's wings bears the name of a season: there is of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The onsen baths also have views of the garden to allow visitors to admire the different flowers throughout the year.
In the center of the garden, the Enmeikaku pavilion was declared one of the "tangible cultural properties" of Japan in 2016. Built in the Meiji period (1869 - 1912) in cypress wood in the style typical of a palace of the time, it hosted the most prestigious guests, such as members of the Imperial family of Japan. It is possible to visit it, if not to sleep there.

Useful information
But the other rooms have nothing to envy those of this pavilion. They are all very spacious, with a small balcony and a view of the garden. The floors are tatami mats, the Japanese decoration is simple but refined, and they offer modern comfort. Good to know, the rooms have private baths but it is also possible to rent some baths for private use. Something to relax in complete privacy.
A tip: book the room with breakfast and dinner included, the establishment is also renowned for its delicious meals and the quality of local ingredients. There are two different menus and the price differs depending on the dinner choice.
