Kôyô forecast - Japan 2024

Every autumn, Japan is decked out in flamboyant colors thanks to the kôyô phenomenon, when tree leaves turn red, orange and yellow. In 2024, the kôyô-gari (autumn color hunt) once again promises spectacular scenery across the country.

These periods represent the peaks of the kôyô, times when autumn colors are at their brightest and most appreciated.

  • 札幌 - SAPPORO - November 8
  • 青森 - AOMORI - November 15
  • センサイ - SENSAI - November 27
  • 金沢 - KANAZAWA - November 30
  • 東京 - TOKYO -December 1
  • 大阪-OSAKA-December 4
  • 福岡-FUKUOKA-December 10
  • 京都 - KYOTO - December 12


Weather forecasts in Japan indicate that the red foliage of maples usually appears a few days after that of gingkos, whose yellow leaves begin to tint, for example, around November 26 in Tokyo.

  • Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido: The first place where the kôyô appear, with its spectacularly colorful mountains and forests. In addition to red maples, we can also see golden birches and larches that add golden touches to the landscape.
     
  • Lake Towada and Oirase Gorge, Tohoku: One of the most impressive landscapes in the northern region, where the river flows through a blazing forest. Tohoku is one of the most beautiful regions in which to enjoy the colors of autumn
     
  • Nikko, Tochigi: Famous for its UNESCO-listed shrines and temples, surrounded by colorful mountains.

  • Minoh Park, Osaka: An excellent getaway close to the city for a quick immersion in autumn colors.
     
  • Tokyo Imperial Palace: A pleasant spot to enjoy the autumn colors from late November to early December.
