Rest in an artistic setting, Tsutsuji-so つつじ荘
Simply an unforgettable experience
If you are looking for atypical and inexpensive accommodation, here is a very good plan, the Tsutsuji-so. There, you also have to love art, peace, and nature. You are on the artistic island of Naoshima, not far from the yellow and black pumpkin of Yayoi Kusama who watches over you. In nature, no engine noise. Boats pass in the distance on the Seto Inland Sea, and the waves crash at your feet.
One night, three possibilities
Tsutsuji-so presents itself as a campsite, a word far too pejorative for such a place. To spend your night, you have the first choice of small houses with all the comforts, two tatami rooms, your bathroom, WC, fridge, and air conditioning. If you prefer, you can opt for a mobile home or, very strongly recommended, a yurt. This habitat, originating from the nomadic Mongolian peoples, has been offered by Tsutsuji-so since 2006. Very close to the beach, here you are in this vast tent with real beds inside, a fridge, and a large table in the middle.
Originally, the small holiday homes built in this quiet location were designed to accommodate "exiles" who returned to the island to visit their relatives. Designed by the architect Ishii in 1992 as cottages, they are now included in Tsutsuji-so and are its soul. In 2006, mobile homes and superb yurts were added, ten in number, each with 4 beds. Alone or in a group, the experience is exceptional.
Plan your comfort
Except for the houses, the toilets are shared in a specific building, and the showers (100yen for 10 minutes of water) or the family bath must be reserved in advance. There is also the solution of the public bath "I love Yû" the artistic sentô, near the port. By specifying it 3 days in advance, you can have your meals on-site at the Tsutsuji cafe, evening meal with grilled meats, and breakfast.
Be careful not to arrive with your hands in your pockets by counting on the local kombini, there are none! It's rare enough to be reported. On the other hand, there are very nice little restaurants near Honmura, but the last bus is at 8:45 pm to return to Tsutsuji-so.

In the heart of nature
If you are an early riser, the best way to enjoy the beauties that Japan offers is to not hesitate to try the walk at sunrise. Perfectly connected to nature, alone, tranquil, calm, walking on the beach with the only sound of birdsong, waves, and the sea breeze waking you up. Works of art in the open air are available to you along the coast to the Benesse Museum, a 15 min walk away.
You will see the difference with the day when the hordes of tourists land. With a night on site, you will feel in osmosis with the artistic atmosphere so specific to this island, as much to create in your turn as to better immerse yourself in the works. In the pink-orange light of the beginning of the day, a little rising sun, you will want to stop time for this perfect moment. And to take a swim, at midnight or 6 am, no problem, the spot is ideal.
