The Rohm Theater, in the Okazaki museum district in Kyoto, replaced the Kyoto Kaikan building in 2016.
Parts of the original, modernist Kyoto Kaikan, which opened in 1960 and was designed by architect Kunio Maekawa, have been retained in the new building.
The theater includes the main concert hall with seating for over 2,000 guests, as well as two other performance spaces the South Hall and North Hall with capacities for 700 and 200 people respectively.
Rohm Square and Park Plaza, the latter with several shops, cafes and restaurants are part of the development.
The refurbishment and redevelopment of the former Kyoto Kaikan was financed by local Kyoto company ROHM semiconductor. The new structure is named after the company.
The theater hosts concerts, film screenings, performances of traditional Bunraku, Noh and Rakugo as well as other cultural events.
