KYOTOPHONIE BORDERLESS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2023 AMANOHASHIDATE

Created in 2023, Kyotophonie is an international music event held in Kyoto Prefecture, bringing together dozens of artists from all over the world, performing in unique settings and staging in the heart of the Amanohashidate natural site.

This new music festival presents an eclectic selection of music and superb local produce as part of a gastronomic experience on the sandy beaches of the picturesque Amanohashidate Nature Park in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.

Following in the footsteps of its big brother Kyotographie, the famous international photography festival, the aim is the same: to open up the Japanese art scene to the world's cultural diversity. Through this musical gathering, Kyotophonie aims to be a driving force for connection between cultures, conversation and experience through a variety of artistic events.

Music, gastronomy and sharing

Behind this festival lie the ideals of diversity, exchange and exploration, which are the main driving forces behind the festival and have guided the programming choices. Kyotophonie is first and foremost a festival that unites the powers of the community around music and gastronomy, with the aim of forging new bonds through beautiful encounters.

French photographer and world traveler Lucille Reyboz and Japanese Yusuke Nakanishi, lighting director for music videos, concerts, films (etc) dreamed up this photography festival and launched the 1ʳᵉ edition in 2013. Ten years later, they inaugurate the first musical edition, Kyotophonie.

A festival to discover in spring and autumn

KYOTOPHONIE Borderless Music Festival held its first session in spring 2023, inviting a diverse selection of musicians such as Salif Keita, Lucas Santtana, SHOW-GO, Trio SR9, Koki Nakano among others. These artists performed in some of Kyoto's most magical venues, including a Noh theater, temples, Japanese gardens and clubs across the city.

The Kyotophonie and Kyotographie festivals are now biannual, taking place in spring and autumn. You'll find the spring edition in the heart of Kyoto, playing with the city's many cultural monuments, and the autumn edition in the north of the city, at Amanohashidate, an easily accessible natural site located 2 hours by train (or bus) from Kyoto.

Offering one of the three most beautiful landscapes in Japan, Amanohashidate is known for its kilometre-long sand spit bisecting Miyazu Bay and affectionately nicknamed "The Bridge to Heaven". Nearby, you can also visit the authentic village of Ine, a traditional Japanese fishing port. A little further west, you can discover the pretty spa town of Kinosaki Onsen.

The festival takes place in the heart of this picturesque setting, with scenes hidden in the forest or on the beach, feet in the water.

"BORDERLESS, 2023 edition

For this first edition, the co-founders chose the theme "Borderless". This theme echoes that of the Kyotographie edition of the same year, which had the opposite theme of "Borders".

The festival takes place over 2 days during the first weekend in October: from Saturday, October 07, 2023 to Sunday, October 08, 2023.

Musical and gastronomic program:

Offering a varied program, music fans will be able to discover twelve artists from seven different countries, including Youn Sun Nah & Ulf Wakenius, Chico César, Natascha Rogers and Eki Shola. The artists will perform on three unique stages in the midst of an exceptional natural landscape.

On the gastronomic front, renowned chefs from France, Tokyo and Kyoto will be on hand for a special culinary experience using locally sourced ingredients! A good reason to come and discover the cuisine of Armand Arnal, Fumihiko Oumi, Rimpei Yoshikawa and Masayo Funakoshi!
